These places will apparently offer as many classes as the Bally Total Fitness across the town. This makes people competing for the machines or swimming lanes.

Read the subtle print on your gym contract. Ask questions: Is there an investiture fee? Do they provide a monthly payment plan? Can you freeze your membership if you are out of station or decide to take a break? For how long? and how many times? Does the membership implicate a free personal training session? Can you have one anyway? And most important, what are you committing to when you sign?
